This highly acclaimed zoological park replaces cages and bars with beautifully designed enclosures filled with greenery, rivers and exotic temples. This entrance ticket lets you explore at your own pace, and you choose to book with the park's lunch menu included, too.

See everything from tigers and cheeky chimps, to gorillas, meerkats and reptiles. Don't miss the leaping monkeys on Lemur Island and some really unusual creatures such as the Komodo dragon and pygmy hippos. There are special shows and night time opening mid-summer, where you get to see nocturnal creatures come to life – a really unusual thing to witness. It's compact and located just 10 minutes' walk from the train station. It does away with traditional cages, so you can get centimetres from the creatures with nothing in between apart from almost invisible glass barriers.

Bioparc Fuengirola is also extremely active in conservation and educational work and is involved in several important breeding programmes designed to help the survival of endangered species. It's not just for families - the park attracts thousands of mature visitors and is perfectly accessible for wheelchairs and the less mobile.

This fairytale-like landmark was built between 1987 and 1994 to honour Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. With its blend of Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar architectural styles, it's a real scene stealer and a dream spot for photos. It also houses the world's smallest church, as recognised by the Guinness Book of Records.Next up, you'll head to the Stupa of Enlightenment, a Buddhist monument that stands as a symbol of peace, prosperity and harmony. At 33 meters high, it's the largest in the Western world and a peaceful place to pause and take in the views of the Costa del Sol coastline before the final leg of the tour.To wrap up, you'll explore the whitewashed Andalusian town of Mijas. You'll have free time to wander about, poke around the shops or relax at a café with coffee and churros – a deep-fried Andalusian treat. Highlights here include the chapel in the rocks, donkey taxis, a chocolate factory and a few small museums. After this, you'll regroup and return to your accommodation.
