Dipping into two of Tunisia's vibrant coastal cities gives a flavour of the local culture on this small group tour. Explore Monastir first, then unearth the secrets of Mahdia's mazy medina. There's also a lunch of local specialities at a country farm to look forward to. Fatima, one of our expert guides, says, ‘The imposing entrance to the historic centre of Mahdia is an ancient gateway known as Skifa Kahla –the “black gate”. It stands a full 33 metres tall, and it has guarded the town since the year 916. Originally, it was part of a larger fortress surrounding the old town.'
First up, we'll stop by the grand Bourguiba mausoleum in Monastir. This grand, golden-domed structure is the resting place of Tunisia's first president Habib Bourguiba, also known as the father of Tunisian independence, and was built to his own design during his lifetime. Inside, you'll see some of his possessions – his desk, books and even his spectacles – preserved in his memory. You'll also catch a glimpse of the seafront Ribat fortress, built in the 8th century during the Abbasid Caliphate.
Next, you'll discover Mahdia, home of cultural highlights such as the ancient El Kebir fortress. Perched on the highest point of the peninsula, you'll be able to take in the coastal panorama from its sturdy Ottoman-built bastions. There will be time to lose yourself in Mahdia's spice-scented medina before tucking into a typical Tunisian lunch served at a rustic farm, prepared with ingredients grown right outside.
