Every big city has its observation wheel, but there is hardly any city more proud of its wheel than Vienna. Constructed in Vienna in 1897, the Giant Ferris Wheel, or Riesenrad, has a long and heroic history. It was severely damaged during World War II with the operating system and cabins all destructed by bombs and fire. Nevertheless, the Giant Wheel was very soon rebuilt, started to operate again and became the eternal symbol of the fortitude and courage displayed by Austrians during the difficult times. This is the Vienna’s wheel’s proud distinction, in contrast to the other three ones erected by the British engineer Walter B. Besset in London, Blackpool and Paris. The 64.75-metre tall Riesenrad remained the world’s tallest Ferris wheel for more than 50 years, untill the construction of the 85-metre Technostar in Japan in 1985. Today, the Giant Wheel visible from afar on the Vienna skyline is among most visited city’s attractions, together with such undeniable treasures as Schönbrunn and St. Stephen's Cathedral.
