Olsztyn is the biggest city in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship region located on the Łyna River in northern Poland. Originally founded in the 14th century under the Teutonic Order, it first came under Polish control following the Treaty of Toruń in 1466. With the First Partition of Poland in 1772, Olsztyn would later become Prussian until the end of WWII when it was returned to Poland in accordance with the Potsdam Agreement.
Nowadays, the Castle of Warmian Cathedral Chapter houses a museum and is a venue for concerts, art exhibitions, film shows and other cultural events, which make Olsztyn a popular tourist destination.
Explore Olsztyn Castle built between 1346-1353 offering magnificent city views, idyllic enclosed courtyard and fortified walls. Inside the complex don't miss the Museum of Warmia-Mazuria displaying relics from the region
The most important sights of the city include the medieval Old Town and the St. James Pro-cathedral (former St. James Parish Church), which dates back more than 600 years. The picturesque market square is part of the European Route of Brick Gothic and the pro-cathedral is regarded as one of the greatest monuments of Gothic architecture in Poland.
Surrounded by nature, be sure to take a trip to Lake Ukiel. Just a few kilometres from the city center its the largest lake in Olsztyn giving this city its nickname as the ‘Lake District’. There are tons of outdoors activities including sports, hikes and a municipal beach.
