Kalavryta is a dreamy mountainside village in the northern Peloponnese – and you'll travel to it by rack railway through the Vouraikos gorge. You'll have plenty of time to tour the village then visit Mega Spileon monastery, one of the oldest in Greece.
The fun kicks off when you board the Diakofto–Kalavryta train, a historic rack railway that rolls its way past mountain villages and evergreen landscapes for 22km. Once we arrive at Kalavryta, located on the slopes of Mt Helmos, your guide will navigate the winding cobbled streets to the main square, giving you the lowdown on this pretty spot and its tragic history.
Next, enjoy some free time to explore at your own pace before reconvening for a typical lunch. Afterwards, head to Mega Spileon monastery, carved into the slopes of a rocky hill and filled with frescoes and mosaic floors. Best of all, the countryside of the Peloponnese will come to life with its rugged mountains, deep valleys and astounding rock formations.
