Panteon został zbudowany w okresie augustańskim i jest poświęcony wszystkim bogom czczonym w czasach starożytnego Rzymu. Odbudowany przez cesarza Adriano w latach 118-128 n.e., budynek jest typowym przykładem architektury klasycznej: geometria i doskonała harmonia jego linii sprawiają, że jest stabilny i zrównoważony.
Wraz z nadejściem chrześcijaństwa Panteon został przekształcony w chrześcijańską bazylikę na początku VII wieku pod nazwą Santa Maria della Rotonda. Przebudowa ta pozwoliła zachować go w nienaruszonym stanie przez wieki i nie ucierpiał w wyniku grabieży i zniszczeń dokonanych w Rzymie przez papieży przeciwko klasycznym budynkom.
