Seu dia começará bem cedo, quando o ônibus vier buscá-lo. Você chegará ao Omalos Plateau, onde você pode tomar café da manhã antes de entrar no desfiladeiro.
A trilha segue a rota do antigo rio Taras e ao longo do caminho a paisagem se torna mais emocionante. Durante a caminhada, você vai admirar as cavernas que protegiam os cretenses em tempos de guerra, agora habitat natural dos Kri-Kri (cabritos selvagens) conhecidos e ameaçados de extinção. Você também descobrirá ervas e plantas que só crescem em Creta. No meio do caminho, você chegará à aldeia abandonada de Samaria e à Igreja de Osia Maria. O desfiladeiro gradualmente se estreita e quando você chegar a Sideroportes ("portões de ferro") as altas paredes serão tão altas quanto 500m acima do nível do mar, com apenas 3,5m de largura. Por volta das 13h30 a caminhada terminará na vila de Agia Roumeli, oferecendo a oportunidade de se refrescar. O ônibus levará você de volta a Chania, por volta das 20h. Esta rota também passa por castelos venezianos e ruínas de assentamentos pré-históricos, bem como remanescentes de muitos outros períodos históricos. A caminhada terminará em Ayia Rouméli, onde haverá tempo suficiente para descansar, provar um verdadeiro almoço cretense e nadar nas águas cristalinas do mar da Líbia. Por último, a balsa o levará de volta à vila de Sfakia.
