The UNESCO-listed town of Kotor was 2,000 years in the making and is entirely worth the lengthy, yet scenic, journey from Durrës in Albania to Montenegro. It's often described as the jewel in the Adriatic itinerary of the cruise ships that visit the bay, and it's easy to see why. Everywhere you look on your guided tour, Medieval landmarks such as the Clock Tower, St. Tryphon's Cathedral and the city walls are framed by the Lovćen Mountains – giving the town an almost fairytale feel. After touring the main historic sites, you'll have some free time to roam the labyrinth of cobbled streets. Top tip, follow your nose to a konoba – that's a traditional Montenegrin taverna – for an authentic dinner of grilled fish, slow-cooked lamb or octopus salad, before heading back to Albania.
