Located about 10 km inland from Luleå town, Gammelstad is the districts’s main cultural symbol and this tour will take you back to a time when Northern Sweden was still a so called no man’s land.
Accompanied by a guide, you will be visiting the Gammelstad church town which is over 400 years old and is the best preserved church town in Sweden. As you walk through the labyrinth of narrow streets between old charming and red coloured cottages, you will hear about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage site and the culture surrounding it.
Most of the church town is still in the same style as it was a few hundred years ago. The church cottages were built by the farmers from the villages nearby as overnight accommodation in connection with church attendance, session at the court, parish meetings and markets. The Church Town was the obvious place to meet friends and acquaintances from other villages.
The church cottages are still privately owned and a few times a year their owners and other parishioners meet for church gatherings, fairs, lectures and cultural activities. The impressive Gammelstad church is located on the highest point of the town and you will be able to visit it if it´s open for visitors on the day of your tour.
