What to expect

Leave with your expert guide to discover the Scarzuola, a rural town in Umbria, where Tomaso Buzzi built his Ideal City.

This surreal and eccentric construction is located in the town of Montegabbione, hidden among the Umbrian hills, famous for being the home of St. Francis of Assisi.

It is said that in 1218, St. Francis built a hut on the spot where he had planted a rose and a laurel, and from which a fountain had miraculously gushed forth. Later, in that very place, the counts of Marsciano had a convent built. In 1956 the convent and all the surrounding property were purchased by the Milanese architect Tomaso Buzzi who built an extraordinary surreal construction: the Ideal City. The artist traced a path full of symbolism based on the Italian illustrated poem "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili".

Buzzi designed and built the Ideal City as a great theatrical scenography in which they are present: Villa Adrian, Villa d'Este (Tivoli), the seven buildings in the Acropolis (Parthenon, Colosseum, Pantheon, Pyramid, Tower of the Winds, Temple of Vesta, the clock tower of Mantua) and Bomarzo.
