What to expect

Codorníu winery is located just 45 minutes from Barcelona and 30 minutes from Sitges. It is nestled in the Penedès region, a prestigious area of high quality wines and sparkling wines. Codorníu, is synonymous to the history of a family of winegrowers which dates back to the XVI century. It is the oldest family company in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. It has more than 450 years of history to the date. Designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the winery buildings were declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1976. They represent one of the most prominent examples of art nouveau architecture in our country. Coming to the winery you will discover a property surrounded by nature and vineyards. The winery is a unique place with a wide range of activities related to: the world of wine, sparkling wine, nature, sport, art, culture and gastronomy. Enjoy the fantastic weather of our country visiting Codorníu, the place where the cava was born.

The origin of cava is strongly related to the origin of Codorníu. This brand was originally the name of a family of winemakers who cultivated and maintained a unique heritage in Europe for over 450 years. In 1872 Josep Raventós produced cava for the first time following the Traditional Method. He decided to use indigenous grapes from Penedès area for the creation of his sparkling wine: Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada. He became a pioneer in his time as he introduced a whole new industry in the region. Manuel Raventós, Codorníu’s driving force, hired in 1895 the Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch (Gaudí’s coeval) to enlarge the winery. The building built represents the fruitful alliance between nature and human labor, but at the same time it also constitutes a stone tribute to the silence of cava. Declared National Historical-Artistic Heritage in 1976 it’s also one of the most incredible examples of the architecture dedicated to the elaboration and aging of cavas.

Tasting offers:

  • Mediterranean breakfast

Codorníu is synonymous to the history of a family of winegrowers which dates back to the XVI century and which has cultivated its vineyards with respect and passion in order to obtain the choicest grapes for its cavas. We are convinced that the produce that comes from the land and the ways it is cooked have created a life style with its own habits such as strolls in the sun, informal gatherings and the siesta. We have chosen these staple foods for our Mediterranean Breakfast: bread with tomatoes and olive oil, cold meats, Mediterránea de Codorníu cava and grape juice for the kids.

Enjoy a Mediterranean breakfast during a layback moment. Immerse yourself in the history of cava, of culture and culinary delights.

  • Art Nouveau Tour:

  • Cheese and cava pairing

Although cheese has usually always been associated with red wine, there are ideal cavas to accompany certain cheeses.

Cava and cheese have similar properties as yeasts, breeding in animals and aging in cavas… For that reason, cava has the virtue of rounding and increasing in the mouth the refreshing feeling, by enhancing the pleasant effect of cheese and the sparkling cava itself.

After the guided visit to the winery, we propose a pairing of 4 cheeses with 4 cavas that you will be able to enjoy in one of our most precious spaces, the Puig room, a Puig i Cadafalch building known as the Cava Cathedral.

By the hand of our expert guides you will learn some techniques and secrets of pairing, a feast for the senses to satisfy the most demanding palates.

Cheeses to be tasted are: a blue cheese, a semi, a mature ewe cheese and a goat cheese.
