What to expect
Travel outside of Kampala, the capital, and into the world of rural Ugandan life in the Kirinda region. Your tour begins with a welcome dinner, where you will meet some community members of the small village you're staying in, and given a local name: what you will be called for the rest of your stay! The next day, take part in the community's daily activities: helping to prepare traditional meals, harvesting coffee, collecting firewood, fetching water. Learn to paint handicrafts and dance cultural dances. Enjoy the local food and drinks at all meals, sometimes accompanied by exuberant singing and dancing! Participate in community games: play soccer or netball with the locals, or go cycling with the community's youth. Plant a fruit tree, what we call the tree of peace, to contribute to the reforestation efforts of the organization you are supporting. Your tour finishes off with a walk and a boat ride through the nearby wetlands, which have been dedicated a Ramsar Site, meaning it is a wetland of environmental importance. Try on traditional Ugandan clothes, the colorful Busuuti dress for women and ceremonial Kanzu suit for men. If you happen to be in the village during a wedding or cultural celebration, enjoy the celebrations in your new traditional attire!
