What to expect
Visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to 75 rescued chimpanzees, and facilities for the rehabilitation and reintegration of wild chimps. Marvel at the magnificence of the endangered chimpanzees at close range. Take a tour of the sanctuary and observe the chimpanzees playing, foraging and resting in their forested enclosures. Witness the important environmental work being done with your own eyes as you support the sanctuary's endeavors to protect the animals. Sierra Leone is home to the Western Chimpanzee subspecies and has the third highest population of chimps in the world. Chimpanzees are listed as Endangered by the IUCN, and face a high risk of becoming extinct in the wild if they continue to be hunted and trapped. Your experienced guide will tell you about the chimpanzees, their behaviors, and the threats they are facing in both Sierra Leone and the rest of Africa. The sanctuary is located in the Western Area Peninsula National Park, within a beautiful rainforest that protects Freetown's primary watershed. Appreciate the birds, butterflies, and lush tropical foliage along the trails of the 100 acres of sanctuary. Enjoy a cold drink and a snack in the sanctuary's shop as you browse the local handicrafts. There is the option to stay overnight in one of Tacugama's tranquil eco-lodges in the rainforest.
