The Cathedral of Granada, based on the former Great Mosque, a great architectural work of the sixteenth century, an irrefutable symbol of the power of the new Christianity. Next to it, small and equally beautiful, the Royal Chapel, where the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, rest next to their descendant Joan I of Castile, “the Mad” and Philip I of Castile “the Handsome”.
From the historical, political and architectural point of view, we will know its symbolism and the meaning of the construction of such magnificent monuments in a city that was forging its new identity.
In just over 2 hours, this exclusive visit will tour different eras and styles, through these imposing Gothic and Renaissance buildings. In the same way we will know the politics and arts of these times, we will analyze their iconographic programs and the most important artistic elements.
On the one hand, the Royal Chapel, where the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand rest. They chose to be buried in Granada and ordered the construction of the largest funeral chapel in the country. Its interior shows the beautiful Carrara marble mausoleums, as well as one of the most important forge works in Spain and the Queen Isabella’s collection of Flemish paintings.
And the masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance, the Cathedral of Granada, the first to be built in this style and the second largest cathedral in the country. Projected in the heart of Granada to show the world the importance of the city for the Christianity. With its extraordinary dimensions, the Cathedral of Granada show an intriguing round High Altar, completely unprecedented in the history of architecture. It also contains the most interesting collection of works by Alonso Cano.
