After being picked up from your accommodation in Lecce, you’ll be taken to the famous town Grottaglie, where you’ll explore the local Pugliese ceramic shops and meet some of the artists. Upon arrival in Matera, you’ll have the chance to enjoy an optional 3-course lunch at Falco Grillaio with local award-winning wine. After lunch, you’ll begin your visit of the famous Sassi, a maze of cave dwellings that cover the lower part of this incredible city, which has been named the European Capital of Culture 2019.
Matera is a city perched not only on top of these incredible cave dwellings but also above a beautiful, dramatic ravine, with sweeping views over the landscape. The city is vibrant with life and culture and many of the structures once in ruins have now been restored into beautiful cave hotels and restaurants. In Matera, you’ll take part in a walking tour during which you’ll stop at the Museo Casa Grotta, a renovated cave with period artefacts that gives the visitor a sense of what life was like before its citizens were relocated out of the Sassi in the 1950s. You’ll also visit the Chiesa di Santa Lucia & the famous Santa Maria De Idris. Spend your day in Matera, wander the streets and absorb the rich history that fills every corner of this remarkable city.
