What to expect
Begin your journey in Glenveagh National Park. Cycle to the 19th century Castle and stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens and walkways. Admire its magnificence and the remoteness of this setting, with the Castle standing proudly on the shore of Lough Veagh. This hunting estate was built in the 1850s and bears witness to the herds of Red Deer that roam freely within the National Park. Keep your eyes peeled and camera at the ready for both the Red Deer and the Golden Eagles. Just stop in the midst of it all and marvel at this rural idyll.Cycle on to the top of the ‘Bridle Path,' flanked by the Derryveagh mountains. Turn left through rugged, rural countryside towards the historic site of the Derryveagh Evictions, now infamous for the cruelty bestowed on the tenants of this land who were forced out of their homes to survive or die and their belongings thrown ruthlessly into a fire. All this just 150 years ago. The strong emigrated to America, Europe, and Australia and started new lives. Descendents now return and reflect on the strength and determination of their ancestors. After the Eviction site, visit Glendowan. Follow the shore of Gartan Lake along quiet roads and through unspoilt scenery. Cycle onto Regency House and Gallery, an 1828 building that houses the Derek Hill Collection, including 300 works by leading 20th century artists. Follow the lakeshore to the Birthplace of Donegal's most famous saint, St. Colmcille, credited with spreading Christianity and founder of the Columban Monks in Ireland. Take a quiet moment to reflect and admire the view. Then finish your day with a gentle cycle back to Glenveagh Visitors Center.
