Levadas have been the lifeblood of Madeira for centuries. These aqueducts carry water from the lush northwest to the drier southeast – and they also serve as wonderful walking trails. This trekking excursion takes you past terraced agricultural fields and blooming gardens, and includes a stop to sample local delicacies at the village market in Santo da Serra.
Madeira's 2,000km-long network of levadas dates back to the 16th-century, and your walking trail has been hand-picked for its scenic beauty, and fragrant smells. Your guide will explain the unique flora and wildlife as you meander gently along the levada, soaking up the beautifully fertile surrounds.
After approximately two hours of mellow trail walking, you'll arrive at the quaint village of Santo da Serra. Here, you'll enjoy perusing the laden stalls of an authentic Madeiran Sunday market, where you can sample delicacies such as the muffin-like bolo do caco breads, and local honey and cakes.
