Overlooking the Gulf of Naples, Herculaneum became famous worldwide when the archaeological excavations brought the ancient splendor of this Roman city to the surface before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD buried everything with lava. Along with Pompeii, it was listed among the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1997.
