The San Domenico Maggiore complex is one of the most important sights of the Neapolitan historical center. This complete guided tour of the museum ends with a visit to the Corridor and to the “Cella di San Tommaso d’Aquino”, and with exclusive access to the “Sala di San Tommaso d’Aquino”, usually closed to the public. In 1272, St. Thomas returned to Naples by request of Charles I of Anjou and was responsible for the reorganization of the theological studies done by the Dominican Order; he taught for two years in the convent of San Domenico which incorporated the local University, Federico II. In the Sala di San Tommaso”, he used to spend his days during his teaching years.
In the course of his life, Saint Thomas studied and lived several times in the Basilica of San Domenico Maggiore. Here objects belonging to the Saint are preserved, as well as the prodigious Crucifix of the thirteenth century which, according to tradition, spoke to the Aquinate Friar.
