What to expect
The Copalita Trail is a journey that combines adventure, nature, culture and sustainability. It is a 6 day trek that takes you from the alpine region of Oaxaca, all the way down to the coveted pristine beaches of the Pacific. Along the way you will not only see amazing mountain panoramas, swim in the crystalline waters of their rivers, traverse through 5 different ecosystems, and eat amazing authentic food, but also witness first-hand how native communities can thrive in this remote location, whilst preserving their biodiversity and chemical free lifestyle.The Copalita trail is a full immersion into Deep Mexico. The steep mountains where corn is grown, the shaded Guanacastle forests that grow some of the world´s best shade coffee, the fertile highlands that produce timber, and the rainforests that provide a home to hundreds of species of birds. Each day, you will embark on a long hike that lasts six to seven hours, accompanied by fully-trained guides from local communities. You will camp under the protection of the trees, drink from fresh water springs, and on clear nights, rejoice that you have chosen a 1 million star hotel.Day 1. Hiking: Optional. Depart from Oaxaca City at 9am. Drive through the beautiful Sierra Madre to San Juan Ozolotepec (SJO). SJO is an agrarian community deep in the mountains, whose economic activities include organic honey, coffee, tomatoes, avocado production, as well as a fully sustainable community-owned logging company. Take in the breathtaking views of the mountains, and learn from your guide about how SJO is a great example of a well-organized, progressive community. Savor local flavors in the camp located inside their community forest. For those wanting to stretch their legs, an optional hike to the highest peak of Oaxaca is available.Day 2. Hiking time: 5 hours.After breakfast, your community guides will take you along the pine and fir forests to the community of San Francisco Ozolotepec (SFO). This trail crosses through the sustainable forestry parcels and includes great views from mountain ledges. Lunch at 12:30, arrive at SFO at approx 4:30pm.Day 3. Hiking time: 9-10 hours.Encounter beautiful landscapes as you hike the trail. Experience the biological diversity of the area and see how different products are harvested under different climate zones. This is a Zapotec community that uses the Zapotec dialect to communicate. Meet members of the community along the way. The trail continues until we reach the bottom of the ravine where the communities of SFO and San José Ozolotepec (San José) meet. San José is also a Zapotec community, and can only be reached by foot. Take a rest and relax your legs by the river, or take the opportunity to swim in the clean, crisp water.Day 4. Hiking time: 6 Hours.Hike alongside the river and cross through lush forests and plantations of mango, coffee, guanacastles and ceiba trees. We will be accompanied by guides from the San Felipe Lachilló community, where we will spend most of the day. Arrive at Yuviaga around 3:30 pm. Refresh yourself in Yuviaga, a paradisiacal fresh water spring. Visit cave paintings in the area that trace back thousands of years.Day 5. Hiking Time: 5 hours.Walk through an impressive Guanacastle tree forest and an abandoned coffee plantation. You are now trekking in a different ecosystem, in coastal vegetation, which very humid, green, dense and beautiful! Arrive at the tiny community of Mandimbo around 4 pm. This community is known for growing unique bromelias and medicinal plants, in an agriculture project operated by the knowledgeable women of the town. Day 6. Hiking time: 45 mins. Rowing time: 6 hours.Walk down to the Copalita River, where rafts and kayaks await you. Row down the Copalita River for 3 hours before reaching the community of La Blas, a haven for hundreds of bird species. After lunch and a brief rest, row for 3 more hours until we reach La Bocana Beach in Huatulco. La Bocana is a huge beach on the Pacific, occupied only by a small fish restaurant and a few surfers. Option to camp out on the sand that night.The scheduled 2017 dates for this trip are:February 19-24March 19-24April 9-14April 30-May 5June 4-9July 2-7August 6-11September 10-15October 8-13November 12-17Tours outside these dates can be arranged at any time with a minimum of 8 people.
