What to expect
Experience Pehuenche Mapuche culture in a natural mountain valley in the Araucanía region, surrounded by the ancient Pewen forest, volcanoes, and Galletué Lake. Enjoy the surrounding natural environment and live like a local in the Quinquén community. The night before, depart from Santiago towards the slopes of Sierra Nevada, traveling by comfortable night bus amidst the Andean mountains and volcanoes.Day 1 Arrive in Lonquimay and enjoy a delicious breakfast typical of the region. Then continue onwards to the Pehuenche community of Quinquén. Venture into the mountains and ancient forests on the Kelu Trufken Trail with an experienced local guide. Listen to the stories of how the Pehuenche people have lived in these lands: the endemic, endangered Araucaria tree produces a piñon, or seed, that people in this region have depended on forever. The Araucaria is so important to them that their name, the Pehuenche, comes from the word Pehuén, which is the Mapuche language word for Araucaria. They are the people of the Araucaria, and the tree is sacred to them--this community's activism is largely responsible for the Chilean government's protection of the Araucaria tree. Reward yourself after your hike with a Pehuenche lunch while you dine and discuss with one of the elders of the community. That night, stay at a local family's accommodation.Day 2Convene with Ñuke Mapu--that's Mother Nature in the Mapuche language--as you participate in the farm work that is so important to the Quinquén community. Learn about the typical Pehuenche livelihood as you help out the community, interacting with and feeding the animals and collecting eggs. Continue enjoying the great outdoors as you hike Los Cóndores trail, overlooking landscapes formed by the beautiful Galletué lake and Batea Mahuida volcano with your local guide. An optional activity will be to ride go horseback riding in the beautiful valley.Day 3Hike the Ad Mahuida trail, listening to your guide's stories on the spiritual beings connected to this trail, while enjoying the grand Araucaria, Lenga and Ñirre trees endemic to the region. Then, participate in a wool spinning and weaving workshop, guided by a local woman. The wool is completely natural, and natural fibers are used for dye. At sunset, head back to the homestay.Day 4As a grand finale to your journey, traverse the Lifkan Mahuida Trail. Travel through Lenga tree forests to experience a unique view of the Quinquén valley. Hike to the highest mountains of the surrounding area, and take in the view of the region you've been immersed in. Enjoy a last local Pehuenche lunch, and then take the transfer bus back to Lonquimay where you can spend the afternoon exploring the town. In the evening, you will take the comfortable overnight bus back to Santiago.
