Built in the first half of the 13th century and located on the most extreme point of the Ortigia promontory the Maniace Castle is considered as one of the most important monuments dating back to the Swabian domain of the city of Syracuse. The imposing structure was commissioned by Emperor Frederick II and it's named after the Byzantine general who took the city in 1038.
The castle's square plan is enclosed within a long perimeter wall with four cylindrical towers at the corners. Walk along the walls, get the most suggestive view of the sea from a privileged position and discover the rooms where Sicilian kings and queens lived. Get the chance to admire the main internal hall, consisting of 25 vaults that represent the kingdoms of Frederick II with that of Sicily in the very center.
