If Cuba can seem stuck in a mid-20th century timewarp, wait till you see the cities of Cienfuegos and Trinidad. This elegant seaside city exudes the air of Belle Époque France as is known as the ‘Pearl of the South'. A tour takes in the most impressive buildings and villas – which are being renovated bit by bit after decades of neglect – and Jagua Castle.
Then, drive through the Escambray Mountains to Trinidad, which appears to stuck in the Spanish colonial period. Stroll through the cobbled streets and plazas lined with colourful houses with big grilled windows. The city's timelessness has earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
