What to expect
Set in the highest part of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and wrapped in a blanket of fog, the Biosphere Reserve El Triunfo spans 120 hectares and contains one of the largest cloud forests in Mexico. Journey into the mystical, wild world of the forest canopy, a haven for the flora and fauna that thrive amidst its fog and moss. From giant tree ferns, ancient bromeliads, and vibrant orchids, to chirping peacocks, mysterious jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, spider monkeys and the striking, colorful Quetzal bird, El Triunfo is truly a biodiversity hotspot, with over 390 bird species recorded in the forest, and the highest diversity of tree species in Central and North America. On this 7 day journey through Chiapas, you will uncover the incredible natural world of Mexico, as you camp in the forest and travel through diverse ecosystems.Day 1 In Tuxtla Gutierrez, you will meet your guide and discuss the details of the itinerary the night before the journey. The next day, we will travel to the stunning viewpoints of Sumidero Canyon to bird-watch. Take in the landscape of the dry forest and the diversity of birds in the national park before moving onwards to Jaltenango, a small town near the Biosfera Reserve El Triunfo.Overnight: Hotel Finca Jaltenango.Day 2Ascend the slopes of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas as we head into the forest, past coffee plantations and into the wild. After 5-6 hours, we arrive at Camp El Triuno, located in the heart of the forest and surrounded by ancient pines and oaks shrouded in mist, where you will camp for the next few nights at 1900 meters above sea level.Overnight: Camp El Triunfo.Days 3-4Staying at Camp El Triunfo is a unique experience to immerse yourself in nature. The next few days, we will explore the trails of the Biosfera El Triuno Reserve. With some luck and patience, we will see the resplendent Quetzal bird, revered by the ancient Aztecs, and the Horned guan, called El Pavón in the region, a unique turkey-like bird that is endangered and endemic to the cloud forests of Chiapas and Guatemala; in addition to mammals, and a variety of fungi, moss, bromeliads, ferns, and orchids.Overnight: Camp El Triunfo.Day 5Travel through pine forests, with peeks of the Pacific Ocean in-between, down to Camp Limonar. Cañada Honda presents another opportunity for bird-watching, including stunning but elusive blue-winged Tanagers, famous for their bright plumage. After a rest, we continue to Camp Limonar. Rest and walk around the tropical vegetation of the camp, where you can spot the Long-tailed Manakins that are representative of the region.Overnight: Camp Limonar.Day 6Continue your descent to the coastal plain, crossing through the biodiversity of tropical forests. As we move into lower altitude and the temperature increases, we will witness a change in the flora and fauna surrounding us. Some highlights of this lower-altitude tropical region include the King Vulture, among others. In Paval, a small coffee farm located near the Tres de Mayo community, our camp awaits with a well-deserved meal.Overnight: Paval.Day 7We continue to travel down through coffee plantations and forests, past the bed of the river Nivollero, and into the community of Tres de Mayo. In Tres de Mayo, we will board an air-conditioned vehicle, which will take to the municipal seat of the Chiapas, Mapastepec, to eat lunch before heading back to Tuxtla Gutierrez.
