What to expect

Once the clock strikes midday, it's all aboard the Black Rose pirate boat for a voyage out in the Cretan Sea. You'll be witness to swashbuckling fun and antics on the high seas as you sail out to St George's Bay from Hersonissos. You'll have a couple of hours of swimming, while back on board a sizzling-hot barbecue will be ready for everyone to tuck into.

You'll need to have your wits about you for this cruise, as with any turn or twist there could be pirates hidden or ready to jump aboard. The Black Rose will be cruising towards St George's Bay where as soon as the anchor's down, you'll have a couple of hours to swim, explore and hatch your plan for the next series of games.

The pirate crew will have prepared a barbecue lunch for all before casting off towards Malia where the next stop is scheduled. Meanwhile, there'll be music to keep everyone entertained. An afternoon of hijinks on the Cretan Sea.

Crete's west coast boasts diverse landscapes and pretty villages – a winning combination. Travel inland through gently rolling hills, stopping at the charming hillside town of Voulgaro – where you'll sample a tasty local cheese pie. Next, there's a visit to the clifftop Chrissoskalitisa Monastery. From the ramparts of this 17th century complex, there are magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and the Libyan Sea. Afterwards, it's just a short journey to the celebrated Elafonisi lagoon, where you can relax on the coral-coloured sands and swim in the turquoise waters before returning to Rethymnon via the hamlet of Elos.

    Gramvousa Ticket Only

This cruise has everything – great scenery, beach time and a helping of medieval history. You'll sail past steep cliffs and caves before docking at Imeri Gramvousa isle – ‘Imeri' means ‘Tame'. Once a pirate hideout, this massive chunk of rock is crowned by a half-ruined Venetian fort. Here, you can stay sunbathing on deck, take a swim or trek up to the castle for the views. Next, your boat will make its way back to Tigani and the turquoise waters of the Balos lagoon. Laze on the white sands, take snaps of the views or splash about in the warm water – it's really shallow and stays knee-deep for a long way out.

    Samaria Gorge – from Chania

Those walking boots will get a good workout during this hike through the Samaria Gorge. You'll pass tiny chapels, walk between the high ravine walls and maybe spot some of Crete's wild ‘kri-kri' goats. The highlight though, is the ‘Iron Gates' – the narrowest section of the gorge where the 300-metre-high walls stand just 3 metres apart. At the end, you'll reach the seaside village of Agia Roumeli, where if you've made good time, you can take a swim or relax in a taverna. Then, when everyone's ready, you'll catch a boat along the coast to where your coach awaits.

    The Island of Spinalonga

The tiny isle of Spinalonga is just a short hop away from Crete but a visit is like stepping back in time. Spinalonga has been a Venetian outpost, an Ottoman town and a leper colony, which led to it being dubbed the ‘Isle of Tears'. A guided walk will show you around the fortress and the colony – which closed in the 1950s. Spinalonga is one of Crete's best-known features and a location in Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel, The Island. Later, you'll sail back to Elounda for lunch in a local taverna. And rounding off the day is a visit to Agios Nikolaos, a chic seaside town.
