Maremma is an Italian region that has managed to preserve its original landscape, continuing to fascinate visitors with its marvelous old-world charm.
In this context we invite you to discover the world of Monteverro, nestled just below the medieval village of Capalbio.
This Wine Estate worked hard to create a world class wine such as a “Premier Grand Cru” of Tuscany – and to achieve the level of quality that is only possible by striving for perfection, with a loving attention to detail. The grapes are hand-harvested and the exceptional terroir can be tasted in every sip. All this helps make Monteverro wine and its taste totally unique.
The medieval village of Capalbio is a perfectly preserved town is perfectly preserved and enclosed by walls that you can walk along for spectacular views.
During the Middle Ages, it belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family, then the Orsini Counts, and later it was annexed to the Sienese Republic. When the territory was turned over to Cosimo dei Medici, it began a slow demographic and economic decline. This led to the onset of the banditry, which plagued the Maremma for a great number of years. The most famous of them was Domenico Tiburzi, whose legend says it was buried in Capalbio cemetery, but half inside and half outside the walls!
Today, the town’s medieval structure is almost completely intact. You can appreciate its charm by walking along the narrow streets in the historic center, along the massive walls (the path of the ancient patrol), and at the Sienese entrance gate with 15-century wooden doors. Do not miss Chiesa di San Nicola, dating back to the Middle Ages and featuring beautiful frescoes; and the Renaissance-style Palazzo Collacchioni in the historic center.
