Established in 1614, the town got its name from its founder King Christian IV of Denmark, as Kristianstad means in fact "Town of Christian". Today it counts a population over 40,000 and has all the elements of a charming destination, from elegant squares to a gorgeous cathedral, as well as street sculptures and architecture that will catch your attention. Historically this town played a major role as a transport hub and as a military base for the region of Scania. It is here that the Swedish film industry started before moving to Stockholm so a visit to the film museum Filmmuseet is a must, and vodka fans will love visiting the Absolut Vodka headquarters which are located in a town nearby. If you are here in the summer time make sure you head to Tivoliparken which is located on the riverside. Aside from being the perfect location for a stroll and a café break, this park also hosts the week-long festival Kristianstadsdagarna which showcases music, dance, food and exhibitions.
