While in the past whole armies battled for days to enter, you can simply walk past the imposing tower walls to explore the Castle’s many buildings and exhibits. Additionally, you will be able to see the Crown Jewels and go on the Yeoman Warden guided walking tour, guided by an actual Yeoman! This exceptional tour is highly recommended by locals if you want real historic and entertaining insight into the Tower and its history.
Tower of London
Also known as her Majesty’s Royal Fortress, the Tower of London gets its name from the white tower, found at the center of the structure, which was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The Castle consists of multiple buildings within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. It has held an incredibly important role in the country’s history and has been besieged many times since control of the tower also meant control of the country. It symbolizes the power of the Monarchy and is where the Crown Jewels have been kept since the reign of Henry III in the 13th century.
Visiting the Tower of London
You will get to explore the different buildings and rooms of the 11th century fortress and learn about the history and curious facts of the royalty that lived there, prisoners held, executions, torture, lives of mint workers, and so much more. The White Tower, the Bloody Tower, the Crown Jewels, the Constable’s Tower, and the Prisoner’s Gate are only a few areas of the fortress-castle you may want to explore. Interactive exhibitions are popular among tourists and if you are there at the right time you even might have the chance to see historical reenactments by the tower’s employees, dressed as guards and mint workers of the past centuries, using the whole Tower of London as a stage.
