Good to know

Buy tickets beforehand or expect to queue for around two hours from mid-July to late August. In other months it's usually a half-hour wait.
Originally hated by artists and intellectuals (who even signed a petition to get rid of it), it's now the most visited paid for attraction in the world.
With a height of 324m, it was considered the world's tallest building at completion in 1889.
Avoid the crowds by visiting first thing in the morning or later at night. Otherwise if you book a table at the elegant Le Jules Verne restaurant, you can access its private lift to the 2nd floor.
Don't bring valuable objects with you. If they set off the metal detector you'll be obliged to hand them over.
The tower really ‘moves'. It sways approximately 6-7cm in the wind and shrinks 15.3cm when the weather turns cold.
The best photo ops are had before 9am (before the crowds arrive) and from Place du Trocadero, where you can get a full-length shot of the tower.
Skip the queue by taking the stairs (704 steps) to and from level 2. It'll also give you a different perspective of the structure and unique views.
Gustave Eiffel's private apartment on the 3rd floor was once the envy of the Parisian elite. See it for yourself and you'll understand why.
The tower was meant to be torn down after 20 years but was saved after being repurposed as a huge radio antenna.
Replicas of this famous tower can be found all over the world, from Las Vegas to Tokyo, Shenzhen and Slobozia in Romania.

The inside story

The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution. Over 100 hundred artists submitted plans, but the contract went to civil engineer Gustav Eiffel, who had already designed the structure for the Statue of Liberty.

The Eiffel Tower was initially painted a reddish-brown but its color changed. By 1899 it was bright yellow, then yellow-brown, chestnut brown and finally the unique “Eiffel Tower Brown” created in 1968. It takes 60 tons of paint to refresh the tower every seven years and it’s painted in three progressively lighter shades the higher it goes (to modify its silhouette).
