The tour starts at the Basilica of Saint Francis, where you will meet the guide and see frescoes by the best Italian painters of the 13th-14th century, such as Giotto and Cimabue. This church, where art meets spirituality, is a powerful place for both believers and art lovers.
From there, you will get to the main city square, Piazza del Comune, where you will see one of the best-preserved Roman temples in Italy – Minerva's temple – which is surrounded by imposing medieval government buildings. Past the Roman ruins of the local amphitheater, walking through narrow alleys and medieval squares, you will reach Saint Rufino’s Cathedral and Saint Claire's Basilica.
After lunch, you will explore sanctuaries and Franciscan sites outside of Assisi with your driver and guide. You will start visiting the Eremo delle Carceri, an impressive Franciscan friary built in the 15th century on the mountain slopes. It incorporates the grottoes where Saint Francis used to retreat. From there you will also enjoy one of the most stunning views over the Umbrian Valley.
Then you will be taken to the Sanctuary of Saint Damiano which is the place where Saint Francis had the vision of the crucifix asking him to fix its church. It was the starting point of his new experience as a friar in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.
The tour will take you finally to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels which protects the tiny Porziuncola under its gigantic dome. This is the very little chapel where Francis and his first companions founded the Franciscan community and also the place where Saint Francis passed away.
