What to expect
There is so much more to visiting Cambodia than Angkor Wat. Not far from the ancient temples, in the heart of Cambodia, lies the Tonle Sap Great Lake, one of the world's most productive freshwater lakes and host to the largest colonies of water birds in South east Asia! Every year, millions of fish come to spawn in the seasonal flooded freshwater swamp forest habitats (the flooded forest) surrounding the lake, attracting a myriad of water birds as well as people who have settled in villages along the lake shores and live by the pace of the changing water level. It is in this fusion of water and forest, this dense and intertwined world of aquatic life, birds, and people that you are invited to immerse yourself in.Itinerary:6 AM: Get picked up from your hotel in Siem Reap and travel by car or minivan to the port (30-40 mins). Take a boat ride to Prek Toal floating village, across the flooded forest and the great lake (1-1.5 hours). On the way, learn about the unique hydrological ecosystem of the lake and its flora and fauna from your local guide. Enjoy a picnic breakfast on the boat. After arriving at the floating village, visit the incredible bird sanctuary under the guidance of a local ranger. With the help of your guide, discover and understand this complex natural ecosystem. Climb a treetop platform to view bird colonies with telescope and binoculars. (Please note that during the low water season (February - March) the treetop platform is not accessible. You will spend more time bird feeding along the main stream inside the sanctuary.)12:30 PM: Enjoy a special lunch prepared by professionally trained cooks at a community floating restaurant.2 PM: Visit the environmental education class and the water hyacinth handicraftworkshop. Then, onboard a traditional Khmer paddle boat, discover how the local community has adapted to their floating and ever-changing environment - visit a family who lives on a floating house to observe the local customs and talk about the differences they face living on the water. Then, take a visit to the crocodile farms, fish farms, floating school, and floating gardens: a unique opportunity to see a unique way of life.3:30 PM: Travel back to Siem Reap.5:30 PM: Arrive back at your hotel in Siem Reap.Tour includes:- All transportation (boats and minivan)- Certified English speaking guide- Port fee- Picnic breakfast (cakes, fruit, coffee, and tea)- Lunch in the village with one soft drink- Water and a cold towel- Entrance fee to Prek Toal bird sanctuary- Paddle boat in the floating village
