The Siena Cathedral
Siena’s Cathedral, also known as the ‘Duomo di Siena’ is a medieval Roman Catholic Church first built between the years 1215 and 1263 on the site of a previously existing structure. It is a beautiful and impressive building, with the outer walls made of white and greenish-black marble with an addition of red marble on the façade. The inside of the building is made of very similar material and the church’s layout is that of a Latin cross with a dome and a 77 meter bell tower that was built and completed in the year 1313.
The Duomo di Siena is one of the greatest examples of Italian Roman-gothic architecture and it is said that upon their first visit, Richard Wagner and his wife were moved to tears by its grandeur and beauty.
The Cathedral Crypt
After an archeological project targeting the recovery of rooms connected to the Oratories of the Young Saint John and Saint Jenarius, work spread to the area under the Cathedral choir. What was found was a total surprise, having uncovered a room decorated with paintings of local artists of the 13th century. This discovery was further proof of the value and development of the Sienese school of painting and architecture. The designs of the walls were incredibly well preserved even after centuries and the structure was found to cast light on the construction phases of the old Cathedral.
