Herculaneum and Mt. Vesuvius have been forever intertwined by Mother Nature’s cruelty. On this excursion, you’ll discover the haunting archaeological site of Herculaneum before going to the volcano. A day trip that features oodles of history and nature.
First up, your guide will lead you through the streets of Herculaneum. Buried under the volcanic mudslide by Vesuvius’s eruption of 79 AD, it has been clawed back from oblivion and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll see the boathouses that are the final resting place of many refugees as well as marble floors, mosaics and frescoes.
Then, in the afternoon, you’ll become acquainted with Vesuvius – the architect of Herculaneum’s destruction. Going by road to the volcano, a guide will escort you up its slopes to take in the views – visibility permitting – over the Bay of Naples. There’s also an optional tour to the summit if you fancy going higher.
