What to expect

There are few more pleasant ways to explore the vineyards in the lava-scarred slopes of Mt Vesuvius than on horseback. This tour takes you for a gentle ride through the Tenuta Le Lune del Vesuvio winery before enjoying a light lunch of its own products paired with its award-winning wines.

You'll be picked up from your hotel and head to the winery on the southeastern foothills of Vesuvius. It lies on fertile volcanic lands 300 metres above sea level. Owned by the Forno family, it produces the famed Lacryma Christi, with grapes from its vineyards – which boast views of the volcano's cone. After instruction, mount your horse for a gentle walk through the vines of Vesuvius National Park for about half an hour.

Then it's back to the winery to munch on seasonal products produced on the estate. And to enhance the tasting, they'll be paired with four of the family's prized wines.

Our first port of call will be Amalfi, where you'll have an hour or so of free time to drink up the atmosphere. Due Golfi Train Tour

All aboard for this three-hour excursion taking you through the rural landscapes and villages of the Sorrento hills by land-train. Perched on a hilltop, the town of Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi boasts spectacular views. From various points, you can alternately see the Gulf of Naples, Mt Vesuvius, Capri Island and the Gulf of Salerno. Paestum & Mozzarella Farm

Temples and mozzarella might not work as pizza toppings but for a cultural daytrip, they're a perfect match. First up is the ancient Greek city of Paestum. Amid its ruins stand three colossal temples – those of Hera, Athena and Neptune. There's also a great museum on site, where you'll discover finds excavated from the site and learn about life in ancient Paestum. We'll then drop into a mozzarella farm. Here, you'll learn how water buffalo are milked, before a chance to try real fresh mozzarella made by the experts.
