Criada graças à paixão pela coleção da família Scharf-Gerstenberg, esta coleção ilustra a evolução do Realismo Fantástico, desde Giovanni Battista Piranesi e Francisco de Goya até Max Ernst e René Magritte.

A coleção está alojada num edifício clássico da autoria do arquiteto Friedrich August Stüler, cujo edifício gémeo forma uma união arquitetónica com o palácio Schloss Charlottenburg, situado em frente.
