Nowhere showcases Sri Lanka's multicultural history better than Galle. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts an exotic mix of architecture that's made for exploring.
You'll arrive in the afternoon and kick off with a traditional puppet show in a local theatre. It takes great skill to dance the masked marionettes. The puppets have been used for generations in traditional Bali and Thovil healing rituals. Afterwards, there's a visit to a moonstone factory where you can see workers craft beautiful jewellery.
Next up is a guided walk through the partially walled Galle Fort, which dates from the Dutch colonial period in the 17th century. Drop into old churches, walk the walls and peek into old merchant houses where generations of Moorish families still live. After lunch, you'll round off your day by heading to the coast to catch some memorable snaps of locals stilt fishing in the Indian Ocean – an iconic Sri Lankan sight.
