Walking trails, known as ‘levadas' crisscross their way all over the Azores. And Faial features some of the most scenic. This morning walking tour takes you along the flower-scented trails between Cabeço dos Trinta and Alto do Chão. Along the way you'll learn about endemic flora and fauna and trek into a tunnel cut through an extinct volcano.
You'll be guided along this levada, soaking up the beautiful landscape, which is made up of stepped farming terraces dotted with homesteads festooned with flowers that fill the air with fragrant aromas.
After a few hours of gentle hiking, you'll enter the dark depths of a tunnel that cuts right through Cabeço – an extinct volcanic cone. Finally, you'll reach Alto do Chão a hilly area offering sweeping views of the Atlantic on one side and the volcanic landscape on the other.
