Fjord-like Kotor Bay features wild landscapes, walled towns and ‘floating' churches. You'll sail in the shadow of jagged mountains and dock at Kotor town for a guided tour, as well visiting the islet of Gospa od Skrpjela – Our Lady of the Rocks. Toni, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Known as Boka Bay by locals, the striking landscape is a source of great pride. The bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its natural, cultural and historical importance – the strong artisan tradition in the area is celebrated, and the towns are recognised for their fine architecture.'
After pick-up, you'll head to Tivat. Enjoy a short stroll through this upscale marina before boarding your boat for the real adventure. Set sail towards the narrow strait of Verige, where the whole bay opens up, and you'll see why the Bay of Kotor is Montenegro's most famous destination. The first stop is the fairytale islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, somewhere Toni loves. ‘Of all museums in the region, the one on the islet is my favourite to guide,' she says. ‘The church is practically an art gallery, and the museum contains gems such as the Jacinta Kunić embroidery.'
You'll then board the boat once more, stopping for a swim if the weather's right. Finally, you'll arrive in Kotor to discover why its Venetian-era walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a wander through its narrow cobbled alleys on a guided tour. Make time to browse the local market, where you can sample and buy local specialities such as smoked ham, sheep's cheese and brandy.
