If you can tear yourself away from Phuket's beaches, you'll discover another side to the island. This small-group tour takes in the characterful streets of the old town, the iconic Big Buddha statue, Wat Chalong temple and the Chalong Bay distillery. Aomsap, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The Big Buddha is 45 metres tall and over 25 metres wide – it's an imposing statue but because it is covered in gleaming white marble it looks light and serene. The views from up there are wonderful, too.'
Kick off with a guided walk along the famous Thalong Road – the historic heart of Old Phuket. Passing by colourful colonial buildings, you'll see a blend of east meets west in the Sino-Portuguese architecture that's found nowhere else in Thailand. Aomsap adds, ‘Phuket owes its historic wealth to the tin boom of the 19th and 20th centuries, when many Chinese miners came to the island to work in the industry. You can still see heavy Chinese influence in our architecture, cuisine and temples.'
At Nakkerd Hill, you'll visit the Big Buddha statue for wow-factor views over southern Phuket before heading to the island's most revered monastery and temple at Wat Chalong. The jewel in the crown of the complex is the Grand Pagoda, a richly decorated space which is contains a bone splinter said to be from the Buddha. Finally, we round off with a tour and tasting session at a local distillery – producer of the award-winning Chalong Bay rum. The retro bottles make a great souvenir.
