Situated at the confluence of the Belaya and Ufa rivers, in the centre-north of Bashkortostan, Ufa is the largest city of the Republic of Bashkortostan in Russia. The city was originally founded in 1574, when a fortress was built by order of Ivan the Terrible, and later expanded in the 20th century.
