Take a break from the hot and steamy temperatures of the coast with a day trip to Shimba Hills. Set high in the hills above the South Coast, this National Reserve is close to Diani in the Kwale County. This was the home of the Sable Antelope, which are very rare, and now almost extinct. Elephants live in the pockets behind the rain forest, buffalo, impalas and warthog may be seen and there is a great variety of birds and butterflies as well.
Morning pick-up from your hotel and drive to Shimba Hills, starting with a short game drive in the park before proceeding to Sheldrick Falls. Deep in the river valley of the park is the spectacular 82-foot waterfall with a natural plunge pool. A shower in the cool clean waters of the falls is refreshing after the walk.
After the walk, enjoy a scenic drive in the park, proceeding to the lodge for a late lunch. Relax at the lodge in the afternoon and enjoy a spectacular view of the Mwaluganje Sanctuary below. While at the lodge, you can see elephants at a distance as they move along and forage in the Sanctuary. On a clear day, you can see the Usambara Mountains in neighboring Tanzania. Later, drive back to your beach hotel.
