Step back in time and visit the medieval town of Todi that stands majestically on a hill overlooking the Tiber Valley. Just a few kilometers away from Perugia and Orvieto, it should be a must on your list when on your Umbrian adventure!
The city is surrounded by three circles of walls, each one dating back to a different historical era (Etruscan, Roman and medieval). Once you enter the city, you’ll step back in time and enjoy wandering around the cobbled streets until you reach the beating heart of the historic city, Piazza del Popolo - the most important square with some important buildings to admire.
See the Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo del Capitano, Palazzo dei Priori, Civic Museum and Pinacoteca from one end, and the Cathedral at the other. Admire its pink and white marble facade and go inside to see the stunning fresco and stained glass window. Take photos from the Cathedral stairs for great views of the square below.
Todi’s beauty can also be found under the city! Just below the Piazza del Popolo is where you can find some underground cisterns, built by the Romans. Situated next to Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Garibaldi also offers a breathtaking view of the beautiful Umbrian countryside below. For more spectacular views, visit the gothic church of San Fortunato and climb the bell tower. You can even see Perugia from here!
You can find the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, one of the best examples of Renaissance art in Umbria, outside the walls of the city. Standing alone surrounded by lush green fields, it’s a special sight to see before you go. If you want to experience Todi like a local, near this church is where the local market every Saturday takes place.
