Het verhaal
Tucked quietly into central Naples, the Sansevero Chapel Museum is easy to miss at first glance, but step inside and it’s a total showstopper. People come here from all over the world for one main reason – the Veiled Christ. Created in 1753 by Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino, it’s a marble masterpiece so delicate and lifelike it almost feels real. Christ lies beneath a thin veil that looks like actual fabric, yet the entire sculpture is carved from a single block of marble. Up close, you can see every fold, every curve and even the softness of the face beneath it.
There’s plenty more to explore inside the museum, too. The chapel is filled with frescoes, family tombs and other sculptures that show off the same spectacular craftsmanship. Head downstairs and you’ll find the renowned anatomical machines, two eerily detailed models of the human circulatory system created under the direction of Prince Raimondo di Sangro in the mid-1700’s. Part scientific experiment, part historical mystery, they add a quirky little twist to the visit.
