Known as one of the UK’s greenest cities, Sheffield is an ideal blend of urban living and natural beauty. It’s home to a lively cultural scene, with attractions like the Millennium Gallery and the Sheffield Theatres complex, which has four theatres to choose from, as well as historical sites like the Kelham Island Museum. Plus, with the Peak District so close by and plenty of parks in the city, you’ll have tons of options for an escape into the English countryside – whether you’re taking on Mam Tor in the Peaks, lounging in Weston Park, or watching the sunset from the top of The Bole Hills.
Top three things to do in Sheffield
1. Visit the Millennium Gallery
At Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery, you’ll see a snapshot of the Steel City’s deep-rooted history. Examples of metalwork that made this city famous are on display, as well as the Ruskin Collection. This line-up, established in the 1800s, features art, illustrated manuscripts, and minerals. Plus, the gallery hosts temporary exhibitions, bringing national and international art to Sheffield.
2. Go for a stroll or hike in the city’s outdoor spaces
With about a third of Sheffield located in the Peak District, there are endless hiking, climbing and biking spots in this national park within a stone’s throw of the city centre. The city itself offers plenty of green spaces, too. The Botanical Gardens are home to over 5,000 plant species, or you can head into the Winter Garden, Europe’s largest urban greenhouse – perfect for a stroll on those chillier days.
3. Catch a show at one of Sheffield’s iconic theatres
Sheffield is known for its theatre scene, home to the largest theatre complex outside of London – you’ll find the Crucible, Lyceum, and Playhouse all in the city centre, as well as other smaller theatres and performance spaces. These theatres have something for everyone, from classic plays to contemporary works.
