100 years ago the first Jewish settlement was built in Krakow. From that time that area started to be the heart of Jewish culture in Poland. The Jewish-Catholic culture has coexisted and developed in peace for centuries until the dreadful moment that destroyed the character of Kazimierz.
During the IIWW almost all Jews were deported and killed in concentration camps, Poland had been terrorized, partly destroyed and pushed into arms of communism after the war.
Now Kazimierz is retrieving its unique character. The is full of synagogues, churches and important monuments. The remains of Jewish culture became the most vibrant part of the city. The streets full of bars and cafes are a magnet for artists and hipsters.
During this tour, you will also visit the Old Synagogue. It is the oldest surviving example of Jewish sacral architecture in Poland. The Old Synagogue no longer serves as a working synagogue but houses many exhibition series that showcase the history and traditions of Polish Judaism.
