What to expect

The Fontanelle cemetery (in Neapolitan 'O campusanto d' 'and Funtanelle) is an ancient cemetery in the city of Naples, located in via Fontanelle, in the district of Rione Sanità, an ancient district of the city of Naples. Called this way due to the presence of water sources in remote times, the cemetery houses 40,000 remains of people, mostly skulls, which in Neapolitan are called "Capuzzelle" of the victims of the plague epidemic in 1656 and cholera in 1836. A true symbol of Neapolitan culture, it reveals the singular, extravagant and extremely close relationship of Neapolitan people with death, where sacred and secular magic and religion mix together to create a unique cult of its kind. The Rione Sanità, where the Fontanelle Cemetery is located, is a place full of mysteries and legends and a symbolic area of the city of Naples, rich in history and tradition, where you can experience the true essence of Neaples. Walking around, we will discover pieces of history, the church of Monacone ("The big monk"), or San Vincenzo (Saint Vincent Ferrer), historic buildings such as the Palazzo dello Spagnuolo, also chosen by the director John Turturro for a scene from his film "Passione". You will be accompanied by the voices of the market where you can find just about anything: fruit, vegetables, and also a lot of street food, in short, a market where you can find everything you are looking for and that will inspire you to go food shopping.
