Why you’ll love this…
  • Explore the natural beauty of the White Mountains and the Kancamagus Highway
  • Learn about the history of the Pennacook community and hear local legends
  • Enjoy stunning vistas of autumn leaves, lush forests, and awe-inspiring mountain peaks
What to expect

Start your self-guided tour of Kancamagus Scenic Highway from the little New Hampshire town of Lincoln. From here, you can get to know the town's culture and history as you start your journey into the White Mountains. Hear the traditional Pennacook legend of a great celestial bear and the hunt which changes the seasons. Stop by Otter Lake and get some helpful tips about moose spotting and birdwatching in this wilderness. As you head toward the jaw-dropping views from Hancock Overlook, you'll learn how these mountains formed in the first place. You'll also get to know about Chief Osceola, the namesake for Osceola Mountain.

Take a good look at the famous Mount Washington shortly after that, and learn the significance of this mountain for the Pennacook people. Continuing, more overlooks will offer views of the mountains and, if it’s the right time of year, the beautiful fall foliage. Explore the glittering Sabbaday Falls as you hear about the accomplishment that was the Pennacook Confederacy, and the chief who made it all happen. You’ll also pass by the Russell-Colbath House, a perfectly preserved bit of history and the site of a spooky disappearance.

Finally, you’ll get the details on an unlikely war between the Rockefellers and a bunch of beavers, the decline of the Pennacook, and the Saco River Curse, before ending up at the Saco Ranger Station in Conway with a carload of new memories and plenty of history to boot.
