Pompeii and Herculaneum are must-visits when in the Neapolitan Riviera. These two Roman cities were buried following a catastrophic eruption by Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. Now uncovered, both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and offer an intriguing and at times haunting insight into life in classical times.
In the morning, your guide will lead you through Pompeii, which was smothered in volcanic ash. See the lavish villas of the Roman elite – you can still see frescoes on the walls – as well as public spaces such as the Forum. Stroll along its cobbled streets as you gaze at the remains of temples and villas.
After free time for lunch, head to the archaeological site of Herculaneum. Unlike Pompeii, it was enveloped by a mudslide. Learn about this former seaside town clawed back from oblivion. You'll see the boathouses that are the final resting place of many refugees as well as marble floors, mosaics and frescoes.
