Un poco de historia
Step through the entrance to Tarragona Cathedral, with its grand Gothic façade, and you’ll enter a site that’s seen 2,000 years’ worth of worship. The Cathedral started life as a Roman Temple, then evolved into a Moorish Mosque, before work began on building the current incarnation in the 12th century. A visit here isn’t just about admiring the bricks and mortar, as impressive as the architecture is. It’s about understanding the stories behind it. Above the main façade, you’ll see the largest rose window in Catalonia, symbolising divine light and cosmic order with its concentric rings and petal-like pattens. Out in the cloisters, each column tells a tale with intricate carvings showing biblical stories and Medieval daily life. While the Treasury holds its own secret – make sure you look up to see the hidden Mudejar ceiling. It blends Islamic star and geometric patterns with Christian symbolism like flowers and crosses, showcasing the influence of Muslim artisans working on a Christian cathedral. There’s so much detail you can dive into with the guided and audio tours of this historic landmark.
