Gerestaureerd door Viollet-le-Duc in de 19e eeuw, werd het fort van de stad op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO geplaatst in 1997. De stad Carcassonne is het grootste en best bewaarde middeleeuwse fort in Europa, met zijn vele torens en 2 omhuizingen, de plaats is bijzonder indrukwekkend!
